Prior to her admission to the Bar, Yuqi trained at Gloria James-Civetta & Co under the guidance of Ms Gloria James, Head Lawyer, and Ms Sheryl Keith, Head of Expatriate Matters. During her training, she was exposed to a wide range of family law matters, including both local and cross-border cases involving expatriates and parties from different jurisdictions. She assisted in matters that required consideration of jurisdictional issues and the practical realities of international family arrangements, and developed an appreciation for the complexities that arise in such cases.

This period of training provided Yuqi with a strong grounding in the practical aspects of family law. She gained experience in case management, procedural compliance, and the preparation of court documents, while working closely with clients during what are often sensitive and emotionally challenging periods. She developed the ability to manage timelines effectively, maintain attention to detail, and adapt her approach to suit the specific needs and circumstances of each client.

Yuqi strives to work closely with clients to navigate both the legal and personal challenges that arise in family disputes. She places strong emphasis on clear and practical communication, ensuring that clients understand the legal framework of their case as well as the options available to them at each stage of the proceedings. She is committed to helping clients make informed and confident decisions, particularly in situations that involve significant emotional and financial considerations.

In her practice, Yuqi adopts a structured and solution-oriented approach. She takes care to break down complex legal issues into clear and manageable steps, and works collaboratively with clients to identify constructive and realistic paths forward, whether through negotiation, mediation, or litigation where necessary. She remains attentive and responsive in her client interactions, and is mindful of balancing legal strategy with practical outcomes.

Yuqi has assisted in a broad range of family law matters, including simplified and contested divorce proceedings, interim applications relating to custody, care and control, and access, as well as maintenance claims, Personal Protection Order applications, injunctions, and variations of existing Court Orders. Her experience across both contentious and non-contentious matters has equipped her with an understanding of the different approaches required depending on the nature and stage of the dispute.

Through this work, she has gained experience in managing case timelines and procedural requirements, preparing and reviewing Court documents, and supporting matters from their commencement through to resolution. She has assisted in drafting Originating Applications, ancillary affidavits, and supporting affidavits, and has worked closely with clients to gather and organise relevant information and evidence. She is also familiar with the practical demands of family litigation, including compliance with Court directions, preparation for case conferences, and assisting in hearing preparation.

Yuqi has also been involved in matters requiring careful handling of sensitive factual circumstances, including disputes involving children and allegations of family violence. In such cases, she is mindful of the need for discretion and empathy, while ensuring that her clients’ positions are clearly and effectively presented. She understands the importance of prioritising the welfare of children and is attuned to the legal principles guiding the Court’s decision-making in this area.

Yuqi is fluent in both English and Mandarin, and is able to communicate effectively with clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. She is sensitive to the cultural nuances that may influence family dynamics and decision-making, and takes these factors into account when working with clients and developing case strategies.

She approaches each matter with care, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility. Recognising that family disputes often involve deeply personal and long-term consequences, Yuqi is committed to supporting her clients in a steady and thoughtful manner. She seeks to build trust through clarity, consistency, and responsiveness, and strives to ensure that clients feel supported and well-advised throughout the legal process.
