The Lantern in the Quiet Room

Child’s voice in the Court

When families face difficult decisions, children may sometimes be invited to share their thoughts and feelings with a judge in a safe and sensitive setting.

The Lantern in the Quiet Room was created to help children and their families better understand what that experience may be like.

Written by Sandra Ong, Matrimonial Lawyer at Gloria James-Civetta & Co, and illustrated by her nephew, Elias Lim, the book tells the story of Alex and his journey through a judicial interview.

Through gentle storytelling and illustrations, Alex discovers that being heard does not mean being asked to make the decision. His words are simply there to help the adults responsible for making those decisions better understand his world.

The story was inspired and guided by Singapore family law, including WKM v WKN [2024] SGCA 1, which considered the important role judicial interviews can play in understanding a child’s views in appropriate cases.

At its heart, The Lantern in the Quiet Room carries a simple message for children: “Your voice matters, but the decision is not yours to carry.
